Memorial Day “Missing Man” table

Shadow of the Cross included “Missing Man” table during coffee hour this Memorial Day weekend. An explanation of each item on the table is provided below.

The “Missing Man” or “Fallen Comrades Table” acknowledges and symbolizes fallen or missing comrades in arms.

  • The white tablecloth symbolizes purity for those who served.
  • The single red rose tied with a yellow ribbon represents those we lost or those still waiting, the unknown, unfound or captured.
  • The candle means hope burning in darkness; a lighthouse for families holding out for answers
  • The lemon represents the harsh fate for those captured or missing.
  • The salts symbolizes tears – plain and simple – a universal element of grief.
  • The drinking glass turned upside down is a silent declaration that this person cannot join in the toast.
  • The empty chair serves as a visual cue to everyone that someone is missing – that matters!
  • The Holy Bible represents the presence of the Lord.
  • The American flag represents the country of the fallen comrade.

“Greater lover hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13.
